Teaching

We taught at the compound for 10 days, 120 children were split into two groups of 60. We arrived just before 9am for our first day of teaching and all the children were there, already waiting. We were told that they had been waiting for the workshop for months and were very excited. Some of the children had attended the workshop before and remembered other girls from Derby High.

We taught children aged 7 to 16, and divided them into five groups. While they were at the workshop we taught them in Drama, Crafts, Maths, English, Geography and Science. We had each set of children for five days, with a break in the middle for the weekend, when we took the opportunity to go off and see the sites around Ethiopia. Teaching happened in a morning until 1pm to allow us time to visit various projects around Addis Ababa. On the final day of each group the children performed the musical "Jonah and the Whale", which lasted around 15 minutes and all the children had a part in it. The musical was written by Katy Freeman and Sarah Middleton before they arrived in Ethiopia. The parents were invited to come and watch and both they and the kids had a lot of fun.
